Lindsey Mercene (b. 2001) is a mixed media painter working out of North Carolina. Her visual language merges Southern dreamscapes, ancient folklore, and lived experiences through the use of recurring motifs and characters. Mercene’s work is greatly informed by roadside vignettes in Appalachia, combining elements of fantasy with Southern landscapes and animals. Through the use of traditional mediums, layered application, and gestural lines with character-driven imagery, Mercene’s work seeks to isolate the components that comprise Southern storytelling traditions in order to understand them. Through her practice, Mercene situates her voice within a dialogue which she refers to as the proverbial “mouth of the South.” She is an exhibiting artist and her work can be found in several regional literary magazines and publications.
